This topic does indeed state that this property is supported for rich text content controls, and this seems to be a doc error. I assume that the MSDN topic you referred to earlier is the MultiLine Property topic in the VBA reference. The article Working with Content Controls also specifies that this property is only supported for plain text content controls. If you select the rich text content control on the document and then click Properties, it does not have the "Allow carriage returns (multiple paragraphs)" option that plain text content controls have. You can verify this by adding a rich text content control in the UI by using the Developer tab of the Ribbon. Rich text content controls do not support the MultiLine property.
